Valero Refinery00

19th of November 2025, Pembrokeshire

John Simpson, ECIA managing Director, visited the coast of southwest Wales, where the Valero Pembroke Refinery stands as a beacon of industrial excellence. With a daily throughput capacity of 270,000 barrels, this facility plays a vital role in fueling the UK’s economy, producing gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil, and low-sulfur fuel oil for communities and industries nationwide. But it’s not just scale that sets this refinery apart.

Valero Pembroke is redefining efficiency through innovation. Its recently commissioned cogeneration unit now supplies power and steam to the site, significantly enhancing energy performance while reducing operational costs. This investment reflects Valero’s commitment to sustainable growth and smarter energy solutions.

The refinery houses a team of approximately 500 skilled professionals, as well as a range of NAECI employers. John adds: “It was my pleasure to meet this employer group and discuss their on-site challenges, as well as best practices in skills shortage and productivity that can be scaled to other similar sites”.

During his meeting with Valero representatives, John gained valuable insight into the strong industrial relations at the refinery and their proactive approach to enhancing operational sustainability. Their commitment to future-ready practices and community engagement is reflected in a robust health and safety culture and a positive local impact.

As the energy landscape evolves, Pembroke remains a trusted partner in powering progress and delivering performance with purpose, and John will continue his journey of building trusted relationships between the site owners and ECIA member organisations.
