The UK Engineering Construction Industry (UKECI)
The UKECI designs, constructs and maintains process plant across the oil and gas, water, environmental, steel and metal, cement, glass, paper, brewing and distillation, food, power generation, nuclear waste reprocessing, pharmaceutical production, petrochemical and chemical sectors. It has a major impact on the UK economy, directly contributing almost 2% of GDP. However, its importance goes beyond direct GDP contribution, since the industry underpins the viability of the strategic economic sectors listed above which, between them, account for nearly 20% of GDP.
Around 50,000 people are employed in the industry in the UK in both site-based activities and off-site design and procurement work. The nature of site work has changed in the last decade as fewer new-build projects have been undertaken in the UK. Repair and maintenance currently makes up the majority of work.
