Changes to the First Aid Regulations

The requirement in the 1981 Regulations for HSE approval of first aid training and qualifications has been removed. This change arises from the Lofstedt review and its recommendations for simplifying and clarifying health and safety legislation.

This does nothing to alter the existing requirements on employers to provide appropriate first aid provision in their companies and where appropriate this will often require training from competent trainers. Whilst the explicit requirement for such trainers to be officially ‘approved’ by HSE may have disappeared, it remains important that employers consider the capability of trainers to provide the sort of training they need, before selecting one to do it.
